Part of our ongoing Cinema Sounds series, Paul Gonter brings us the work of multimedia artist Meredith Monk.
The Artist: Meredith Monk
The Influence: future rituals
The Result: forgotten mythologies
The fluidity of Meredith Monk helps define what it means to be a multimedia artist. Speaking of her as a composer is too limiting. So is speaking of her as a choreographer, a performer, a vocalist, or a filmmaker. This elusiveness is compounded by her aesthetic, where she seamlessly combines the minimal and the excessive.
16 Millimeter Earrings, Monk’s 1979 collaboration with Robert Withers, is a perfect example of the breadth of her work.
Monk’s music is available for purchase on iTunes.
