Part of our ongoing Cinema Sounds series, Paul Gonter brings us six tracks from Finnish experimental rock bands Joensuu 1685 and Circle.
The Artists: Finish experimental filmmaker Mika Taanila
The Influence: structuralism, post rock, and Erkki Kurenniemi
The Result: frantic, textured bliss
Mika Taanila is a filmmaker from Helsinki, Finland. He has produced many short experimental films and documentaries that usually focus on the ever decreasing line between man, nature, and technology. Like many experimental filmmakers, Taanila has also produced music videos; seemingly, the only arena that renders the “experimental” appropriate for mass consumption.
Joensuu 1685 and Circle (not to be mistaken as the Australian indie-pop outfit) are both experimental / psychedelic / shoegaze / genre crushing bands from Finland. The Joensuu brothers have only released a 7″, Sick City/Walk On Water (2008) and a self titled full-length back in 2010, while Circle has consistently put out albums since 1996.
