Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story

Director Todd Haynes (Velvet Goldmine) gained some notoriety with this controversial short film which retells the story of singer Karen Carpenter and her tragic fight with anorexia. Using Barbie and Ken dolls instead of human actors, the film is surprisingly engaging and not exploitative.

Cinephile Interest:
Haynes’s decision to use Barbies can be distracting and funny at times, but the dolls parallel the Carpenters in a sophisticated way: they’re both wholesome pop commodities, yet powerful body issues are bound up in that package. Despite legal action by Carpenter’s family, the bootlegged Superstar has gained a wide cult following, eventually making Entertainment Weekly‘s list of the top 50 cult films of all time.
