"Tom Sizemore gives a strong performance in the lead, doing what he can to flesh out the [mysterious] character and help us understand how his frequent sweetness and generosity could sit side by side with a sometimes explosive temper"
Eye for Film
James E. "Jack" Durant opened the now-landmark steakhouse on Central Avenue in Phoenix, Arizona on July 1950 and it has remained family-owned ever since. In the '40s, he worked as a pit boss at the Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas, in the employ of gangster Bugsy Siegel.
Durant's Never Closes is the story of Jack Durant (portrayed by Tom Sizemore, Black Hawk Down, Saving Private Ryan, Twin Peaks), a ladies man whose connections to the mafia remain a mystery. He was notorious for leaving his house as well as an annual allowance of $50,000 to his pet English bulldog, Humble. He made a fortune and spent some of it to help build Good Samaritan Hospital and was briefly, in the 1950s, one of the FBI's Top Ten Most Dangerous Men in Arizona.
Durant's Never Closes takes place in a single day of Durant's life, and is based on the works of Mabel Leo and Terry Earp about this dynamic character who was at once charming, powerful and dangerous. Supporting players include Pam Grier and film legend Peter Bogdanovich. "He has such a really interesting presence. I was writing this character, George, and I just thought, This guy is so totally Bogdanovich. He knew Tom Sizemore, and really wanted to work with him again, so we got him."Travis Mills.
