Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie
(Le charme discret de la bourgeoisie)

Film still: Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie

WINNER
Best Foreign Language Film
Academy Awards, 1973
"Luis Buñuel's 1972 comic masterpiece...is perhaps the most perfectly achieved and executed of all his late French films"
  —Chicago Reader
4 stars "Caustic... consistently amusing in its champagne-dry wit"
  —Slant Magazine
4 stars "Most of the films of Luis Buñuel are comedies in one way or another, but he doesn't go for gags and punch lines; his comedy is more like a dig in the ribs, sly and painful"
  —Roger Ebert

Subversive charm, just in time for the holidays from Luis Buñuel, in one of his most wonderful of films. A brilliant cast, including Delphine Seyrig, Bulle Ogier, Stéphane Audran, Michel Piccoli, Jean-Pierre Cassel and Fernando Rey portray three couples, always trying to get together for dinner, who never quite can. Jean-Claude Carrière wrote the fantastic script filled with hilarious encounters, dreams, ghosts, drug deals and interrupted sexual encounters. One of Buñuel's most commercially successful films, Buñuel said his favorite characters in the film "were the cockroaches."

Directed by Luis Buñuel, France, 1973, 112 mins. In French and Spanish with English subtitles.
