An incisive upper-class romantic comedy of manners, Two Women stars Natalya (Anna Astrakhantseva), married to a stolid Russian landowner Arkadi and worried about her fading charms, finds herlself competing for the affections of Alexei (Nikita Volkov), her son's young tutor, with none less than her adopted daughter Vera (Anna Levanova). Bored with life, she welcomes the attentions of Mikhail Aleksandrovich Rakitin (Ralph Fiennes) as her devoted but resentful admirer, without ever letting their friendship develop into a love affair. As Alexei and Vera draw closer, Natalya struggles with her feelings for Alexi and Mikhail with his for Natalya, and as Arkadi begins to suspect his wife's distance, the ménage turns into a complex web of unrequited love, guilt, jealousy and lust.
Two Women, an adaptation of Ivan Turgenev's 1855 play A Month in the Country, features Ralph Fiennes, speaking perfect Russian, in the superbly played pivotal role of Rakitin and also stars French actress/writer Sylvie Testud.
