"Innocence Unprotected ... is one of the most delightful films I've ever seen, and one of the hardest to describe"
"A funny and genuinely endearing tribute to an innocent folk herobizarre in spots, and definitely Makavejev"
Most films today pale in originality if compared to the undaunted, brilliant work of Dusan Makevejev. Filled with humor and joie de vivre, Makavejev's work is also fiercely political and formally daring. In Innocence Unprotected, he mixes archival and documentary footage in a hilarious trip to the first Serbian talkie, starring Makavejev's own childhood hero, the strongman and acrobat Dragoljub Aleksic.
Roger Ebert was an early fan, calling Makavejev the only director besides Jean-Luc Godard "able to leap nimbly back and forth over the line dividing a film from reality." Innocence Unprotected is unlike any other filmoriginal, hilarious, touching, tragic, and profound.
Directed by Dusan Makavejev, 1968, Yugoslavia, 75 mins. Serbian with English subtitles.
