Tuesday, August 11, 2020: You Never Had It – An Evening with Bukowski is an extraordinary documentary from Director Matteo Borgardt that transports you back to January 1981 for an intimate evening conversation with legendary writer and poet Charles Bukowski (and his soon to be wife, Linda Lee Beighle) at his San Pedro home. The documentary features never-before-seen footage from the writer rediscovered by producer/journalist Silvia Bizio in her garage 20 years after Bukowski’s passing, in this extraordinary time capsule. Bukowski, Bizio and friends smoke cigarettes and drink wine over a languorous evening that provokes intimate discussions of sex, literature, childhood, and humanity from the irreverent writer and poet himself. This release coincides with what would have been Charles Bukowski’s 100th birthday this year, on August 16th.
Variety praises the film, saying, “When you read Bukowski, you’re carried along by the music of his voice, and that happens in this movie too. You want to keep listening,” and the San Francisco Chronicle states, “This conversational documentary with the prurient poet of Los Angeles’ lower depths is remarkably rich with insights into the writing craft and business, sex and love, humanity’s lack of humanity, and more.”
