First up is Nikolaus Geyrhalter's documentary Earth, opening April 17, 2020
Tuesday, April 14, 2020: The Facets Cinematheque is currently closed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, but audiences in Chicago and across the country can continue to watch newly released independent and international films at Facets Virtual Cinema, which launches Friday, April 17, 2020 with Nicolas Geyrhalter’s latest masterpiece Earth (2019). Facets Virtual Cinema is made possible through collaborations with independent and international film distributors. 50% of all ticket purchases go to Facets in support of the organization during the closure.
Executive Director, Karen Cardarelli, says: “While Facets physical doors are closed to support the health and safety of our community, our staff has been exploring ways we can provide programs digitally. I am pleased to announce the launch of Facets Virtual Cinema, offering the same quality programming from our Film Program Director, Charles Coleman, but now you can watch them from the sanctuary of your home. These films are intended to enlighten, entertain, inform and unite us during these unsettling times. As we share an exciting schedule of films, we hope you’ll share your opinions and thoughts as well on each selection.”
The first film to be screened in the Facets Virtual Cinema is the outstanding documentary, Earth (2019), directed by Nicolas Geyrhalter (Our Daily Bread), which Facets Program Director, Charles Coleman, describes as “an examination of humanity’s dramatic impact on the physical state our planet, and can be regarded as a great opportunity to be more aware and strive to do a better job about our path toward a more sustainable future.” Earth screens from Friday, April 17 – Friday, May 1, with tickets available for $12.00 per 72 hr. rental, preorders are available now.
By purchasing a ticket to one of Facets or any other independent cinema’s virtual screenings, audiences can support the organizations and filmmakers who do so much to enrich our shared film culture. The full Facets Virtual Cinema calendar will be regularly updated at facets.org/cinematheque along with ticket prices and other film information.
