Two of Takashi Miike’s most infamous and rarely screened nightmares collide for one night only.

Takashi Miike has spent decades testing the limits of genre cinema, moving effortlessly from yakuza nihilism to children’s fantasy, grotesque body horror to deadpan comedy. But buried within his sprawling filmography are works so strange, transgressive, and psychologically destabilizing that they’ve taken on near-mythic status among horror fans. For the 5th Annual Anime Club Presents series, audiences are invited into two of the director’s most unsettling fever dreams – films that push identity, violence, and surrealism to their breaking point.

One drifts through the underworld of gangsters and psychic disintegration, spiraling into a bizarre hallucination of loyalty, masculinity, and transformation somewhere between nightmare and absurdist comedy. The film originally received a theatrical run at FACETS in the early 2000s, and has since become one of Miike’s most elusive cult masterpieces. The other, produced for television before becoming infamous for being deemed “too disturbing,” descends into a chamber of cruelty and impossible suffering that still stands as one of the most controversial horror works of the 2000s.

Together, these deep cuts reveal Miike at his most unrestrained: playful, horrifying, confrontational, and impossible to predict. Long whispered about by cult film devotees but rarely experienced theatrically, these films remain singular works not only within Miike’s career, but within horror cinema itself. Fans of extreme cinema, transgressive storytelling, and the stranger corners of Japanese genre film won’t want to miss this one-night descent into madness.
