“A precise, beautiful examination of what it means to be human.” – Emily Zemler, Observer
“Kogonada has made a film that taps into loss and grief in a way that feels both progressive and familiar at the same time.” – Brian Tallerico, RogerEbert.com
When his young daughter’s beloved companion, an android named Yang, malfunctions, becoming totally unresponsive, Jake (Colin Farrell) searches for a way to repair him, since Yang is regarded as a member of the family.
But having purchased Yang “certified refurbished” from a now-defunct store, he is led first to a conspiracy theorist technician and then a technology museum curator, who discovers that Yang was actually recording memories. Jake’s quest eventually becomes one of existential introspection and he discovers that his life that has been passing in front of him, and the more that he discovers about Yang, Jake finds himself reconnecting with his wife (Jodie Turner-Smith) and daughter, caught unawares about the relationship between memory and technology. Featuring music from Ryuichi Sakamoto and Mitski, this acclaimed meditative science-fiction drama by Kogonada (Columbus), is a quietly emotional exploration of remembrance and what it means to exist in this world.
