“Nearly half a century later, Alucarda stands the test of time as truly transgressive horror cinema for all the best reasons.” – Rue Morge

Our plunge into sacrilege begins at 7pm with the stunning 2K restoration of Alucarda (1977), a Mexican gothic horror masterpiece that confronts the perilous intersection of religious fervor, sexuality, and demonic influence.

Directed by Juan López Moctezuma, Alucarda follows two orphaned girls, Justine and the enigmatic Alucarda, whose intense bond unleashes a force of darkness upon the convent they call home. As nuns and priests descend into madness, scenes of possession, exorcism, and ritual blasphemy unfold with nightmarish intensity. Infused with haunting imagery and provocative symbolism, the film subverts Catholic iconography—crosses, rosaries, and confessions transform into potent symbols of rebellion, forbidden desire, and ecstatic release.

Alucarda explores themes of agency, identity, and resistance against oppressive forces, and has become a touchstone for queer and feminist interpretations. With its blood-soaked rituals and cries echoing through the convent’s walls, this cult classic captures the thrill and terror of faith stretched to its breaking point. An unholy fusion of sexuality, defiance, and horror, Alucarda immerses viewers in a surreal landscape where purity and damnation meet head-on. For fans of dark, transgressive horror, this screening is an unforgettable experience and a vital entry in the annals of gothic cinema.
