Before streaming, before Blu-ray restorations, there was VHS – where cult anime lived, circulated, and built its reputation through word of mouth, tape trading, and late-night rewatches. These OVAs are products of that era: bold, strange, and unconcerned with mainstream appeal, made at a time when animators were free to experiment with genre, tone, and visual excess.
First, a globe-trotting supernatural thriller blends espionage, aristocratic vampires, and shadowy conspiracies into a stylish, action-heavy ride that feels pulled straight from the shelves of a well-worn video store. Then, the night descends into something darker and more grotesque: a body-horror nightmare where science, demons, and desire collide in a visceral, shape-shifting spectacle that pushes the limits of ’90s animation.
Together, these films capture the anything-goes energy of the OVA boom – where horror, sci-fi, and the occult bled into one another, and where the most interesting work often lived just off the beaten path. Join us for a night of tape-era anime the way it was meant to be experienced: raw, strange, and a little bit dangerous.
