“No matter what you take away from writer-director Halina Reijn’s daring, alluring, and ultimately joyful Babygirl, one idea flutters around it like a potent perfume cloud: both desire and the memory of it are what make us feel alive.” – Stephanie Zacharek, Time
☆ ☆ ☆1/2 – “Babygirl is a high-wire act. It’s a small miracle the film works as well as it does.” – Sheila O’Malley, RogerEbert.com
In this erotic new thriller, a story of forbidden pleasure, Babygirl has been praised as one of Kidman’s best performances.
In the film she plays Romy, a high-powered CEO who risks her position, and her family, by starting up an impassioned love affair with her much younger intern, Samuel (played by Harris Dickinson). As much as it is, this film is about explores how sex, success, and control impact every part of one’s life. The affair at the heart of Babygirl allows Romy and Samuel to play out their confusion around power, gender, age, hierarchy, and primal instinct.
Filmmaker Halina Reijn (Bodies Bodies Bodies) has stated that she is “fascinated by the duality of human nature, and this film is an attempt to shine a light, without judgement, on the opposing forces that make up our personalities…. I was delighted to be able to make a film about feminine desire, but it’s also about an existential crisis, it has many layers.” Nicole Kidman won the Volpi Cup for Best Actress at the 81st Venice International Film Festival and Babygirl was named one of the top ten films of 2024 by the National Board of Review, where Kidman was also awarded the Best Actress prize.
Directed by Halina Reijn, Netherlands/U.S.A., 2024, DCP, 114 mins.
