“A stunningly proficient piece of action film-making, plunging us into a world of delirium and fear.” – Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
Reexperience the cult phenomenon that forever changed the landscape of genre cinema.
Winner of the Popularity Prize at the Japanese Academy Awards, Battle Royale tells the story of a bizarre government act designed as a deterrent to juvenile crime. Once a year, an entire class of secondary students are abducted, fitted with explosive collars, stranded on an island, supplied with a random assortment of weapons, and given three days to battle each other to the death. This time, their spiteful ex-teacher, played by the incomparable Beat Takeshi (Sonatine), oversees the mayhem.
Battle Royale is the last film of Kinji Fukasaku, a prolific director who worked in a wide variety of genres, from yakuza films to historical epics to science fiction, fantasy, and horror.
Screening is the director-preferred original theatrical cut, in Japanese with English subtitles.
