Holiday Detour Series

Celebrate differently this year with films that stray from the traditional holiday fare but use their seasonal settings as a backdrop for compelling character studies.

"Blanchett’s performance is utterly right, her hauteur and elegance matched with fear and self-doubt."

- The Guardian

"A lush emotional melodrama along the lines of the films of Douglas Sirk"

- RogerEbert.com

Set in 1950s New York and inspired by the novel The Price of Salt by Patricia Highsmith, Carol centers around two women struggling to form and hide their romantic relationship.

Aspiring photographer, Therese (Rooney Mara), works at a department store and dreams of having a better life. When she encounters a wealthier older woman (Cate Blanchett) going through the trials and tribulations that come with a divorce, the two form an immediate connection and tread cautiously around one another.

The period accuracy of Carol whisks the viewer away to the upper-class glamour of upscale Manhattan more than a half-century ago. Notable performances from everyone involved elevated this movie to immediate classic status. Having caused controversy when snubbed from the Oscars upon its premiere in 2015, come see the holiday film you may have missed and that was wrongfully overlooked in its heyday.
