Friday, March 15, 2024, SUPER-HORROR-RAMA! presents a double feature of Hammer’s The Shadow of the Cat (1961) at 7pm and Stephen King’s Cat’s Eye (1985) at 9pm, two underseen thrillers about cats that kick ass. 10% of net ticket proceeds will be donated to PAWS Chicago.
2 limited edition pinback buttons will be available for purchase at this event, or you can buy a Double Feature Ticket and get both buttons for free. We’ll also have horror vendors, drink specials, and special giveaways before both films.
When it comes to horror movies, cats get all the worst roles. They spring out of closets and trash cans for cheap jump scares, gone in a flash. Or they’re the first kill before humans bite the dust. If a cat nabs a lead role, chances are it’s to play evil incarnate, a supernatural force that must be destroyed at all costs. Our furry friends deserve better. Where’s their positive representation in horror?
The Shadow of the Cat and Cat’s Eye are feline-focused thrillers in which adorable tabbies are the heroes of the story. These courageous cats face a wide variety of foes, from murderous heirs to crazed crime bosses to a teeny-tiny troll that doesn’t hide well with the bells that dangle from its cap—come on, you basically look and sound like a cat toy! The kitties in these films are fierce defenders of the people they love, and, if you’re not on their team…well, it’s claws and hisses for you.
This screening is sponsored by The House of Monsters and programmed by John McDevitt, FACETS’ Community Engagement Manager.
PRESHOWS
These screenings of The Shadow of the Cat and Cat’s Eye include brand new animated ad galleries created by Bill Van Ryn of Drive-In Asylum, a fanzine exploring classic eras of horror, sci-fi, cult, and exploitation films through vintage newsprint ads.
PRESENTED IN PARTNERSHIP
This series is presented in partnership with PAWS Chicago, a non-profit animal shelter organization whose mission is to build No Kill communities, starting with a No Kill Chicago, that respect and value the life of every cat and dog; to end the overpopulation of homeless animals through solutions, practices, and education; and to transform animal welfare by setting higher standards in the way animals are treated and developing a sustainable, solutions-based model.
