Join critic Ray Pride, director John McNaughton, and producer Steve A. Jones for a screening and conversation about one of the most brutally realistic serial killer films Chicago has produced – Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer. Followed by a live DJ set by Chicago-based producer Beau Wanzer.

In 1986, Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer was shot on 16mm in less than a month with a budget of only $110,000. The film not only features Chicago as its setting and backdrop but was the debut feature of Chicagoans John McNaughton (director/co-writer), Steve A. Jones (producer), and Michael Rooker (lead actor).

Their unabashed lack of feature film making experience only fueled a resourcefulness and, in the finished film, an unpolished if not brutal authenticity that drew swift attention (albeit highly contrasting) and ultimately earned the film an impressive festival run, critical praise, and an X rating – a distribution death knell that scared off potential distributors for years. It wasn’t until the MPAA instituted an NC-17 category for “non-pornographic adult films” that Henry (along with films like Greenaway’s The Cook, the Thief, His Wife, & Her Lover and Almodóvar’s Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!) was granted an official theatrical release, allowing the film to transform into a cult classic on the midnight circuit.

Loosely based on the testimony of convicted killer Henry Lee Lucas and a Texas murder spree in the 1950’s and 60’s, the film has been described as disturbing, disgusting, and one the best pictures of the year by rapturous critics. Director John McNaughton and producer Steve A. Jones will appear in person to talk about the making of Henry and their cinematic penchant for the underworld.

The screening is preceded by a VIP Mingle, exclusive to VIP Ticket holders, and is followed by a talkback and live DJ set by Beau Wanzer.

Host – Ray Pride (Film Critic)

Ray Pride is senior editor and film critic at Newcity, contributing editor at Filmmaker, and photographer/author of the forthcoming book Ghost Signs of Chicago.

Special Guest – John McNaughton (Director)

John McNaughton grew up in Chicago and graduated from Columbia College, Chicago, with a degree in film production and still photography. After a long line of various jobs, McNaughton found work in commercial film and video production, before making a deal with fledgling video company, MPI, to distribute his first documentary, Dealers in Death. Two years later MPI funded, Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, his first feature. After watching Henry, Martin Scorsese hired McNaughton to direct Mad Dog and Glory for Universal Pictures, starring Robert DeNiro, Bill Murray and Uma Thurman. Since then, Mr. McNaughton has worked continuously directing feature films, TV pilots, episodic television, documentaries and occasionally, live theater.

Special Guest – Steve A. Jones (Producer)

Steve grew up in Brooklyn New York and was educated at The Institute of Design at The Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Design, majoring in Animation. After being a director of animated TV commercials for many national clients such as Cap’n Crunch and McDonalds, he teamed up with director John McNaughton to produce the controversial Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer which was nominated for 6 Independent Spirit Awards. The collaboration with Mr. McNaughton continued, creating both Studio and Independent films including Mad Dog and Glory, Normal Life, Wild Things, and The Harvest.
