“Watching this film transports you to that innocent time where it was hard to put together the budget and crew to make a good film.” – Tom Atkinson, Love Horror
Lightning-zapped mall security robots terrorize unruly teenage staff after hours in one of the most energizing slashers of the ‘80s.
Screening begins with a virtual Q&A with director Jim Wynorski at 6:30pm, followed by the film at 7:00pm.
Chopping Mall is Jim Wynorski’s electrifying second feature as writer-director, and it provides Kelli Maroney a phenomenal starring role. Park Plaza Mall unveils a new security system led by a trio of robots (voiced by Wynorski and bearing a striking resemblance to Johnny 5 and WALL·E) who utter monotone pleasantries as they assert the rules with deadly force. Maroney plays Alison, a down-to-earth food court pizza girl who stays after hours to enjoy a blind date alongside three other couples, and they soon find themselves trapped in the mall, dodging killbot lasers and fighting back.
Chopping Mall also features an over-the-top performance from Barbara Crampton (Re-Animator) and cameos by Dick Miller, reprising his role from A Bucket of Blood (1959), as well as Mary Woronov and Paul Bartel, reprising their roles from Eating Raoul (1982). Filming took place at the Sherman Oaks Galleria, the same shopping mall seen in Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982) and Commando (1985).
