A pulse-pounding descent into ecstasy and annihilation, Climax (2018) is Gaspar Noé at his most hypnotic and unhinged with this film that turns a celebration into a waking nightmare.

Inspired by real events, the story follows a troupe of young dancers who gather in an abandoned school to rehearse and party after a successful run-through. When their sangria is spiked with LSD, the night fractures into paranoia, violence, and psychic freefall. What begins in communal euphoria spirals into something primal and apocalyptic.
Noé stages the film with virtuosic control: extended, gravity-defying dance sequences give way to roaming, inverted camera movements and suffocating red-lit tableaux. The soundtrack—throbbing with ’90s electronic cuts—drives the film forward as time dissolves and social bonds disintegrate. Performances feel frighteningly immediate, blurring choreography and chaos.
Both exhilarating and punishing, Climax is less a traditional narrative than an experience—an immersion into collective hysteria and the thin line between transcendence and collapse. Few films capture the terror of losing control with such seductive intensity.
