Presented in collaboration with Palenque LSNA, ADIFF Chicago’s Closing Night celebration presents the Chicago Premiere of San Juan Hill: Manhattan’s Lost Neighborhood, followed by a panel with Producer Rita Coburn and other guests.
San Juan Hill: Manhattan’s Lost Neighborhood uncovers the erased history of a vibrant Black and Latino community in Manhattan, deemed a slum and demolished for urban renewal. Backed by city officials and powerful real estate interests, the area was cleared for the construction of Lincoln Center. With rare archival footage, new records, expert analysis, and poignant interviews with former residents, the film resurrects the story of this vanished Manhattan enclave. It celebrates the people, the thriving arts scene, and the rich culture that defined San Juan Hill, revealing a powerful and enduring legacy still felt across New York City.
Directed by Stanley Nelson, 2024, 60 minutes, USA, Documentary
