“Loaded with atmosphere, bared flesh, and a haunting turn by the Dietrich-esque Delphine Seyrig as an ageless countess who hungers for a pair of newlyweds (and their necks).” – Chris Nashawaty, Entertainment Weekly
Sumptuous and radiant, Daughters of Darkness is inspired by the true story of Countess Elizabeth Báthory, a Hungarian noblewoman who bathed in the blood of virgin women to preserve her youth.
Valerie and Stefan, two newlyweds on their honeymoon at a seaside grand hotel in the dead of winter, are the only guests until the arrival of the Countess Elizabeth Báthory (Delphine Seyrig) and her secretary Ilona, who request an adjoining suite. The Countess is supremely expressive, seductive, and intoxicatingly beautiful, and she hasn’t aged a bit since her last visit 40 years ago. Stefan begins to display a vicious mean streak, the newspapers describe a string of murders of young women drained of blood, and the Countess is quickly revealed to be a vampire with a romantic fixation on Valerie. The Countess is styled after Marlene Dietrich with stunning blonde finger waves, and Ilona is the spitting image of Louise Brooks with an immaculate black bob.
