Takashi Miike’s Dead or Alive (1999) is a feral, genre-smashing crime saga that explodes onto the screen with a six-minute montage of sex, drugs, and shotgun blasts—and somehow gets even wilder from there.
Released the same year as his breakout Audition, this is Miike at his most lawless: confrontational, chaotic, and gloriously unpredictable. Set in Tokyo’s Shinjuku district, the film pits Ryuichi (Riki Takeuchi), a gangster with big ambitions and an even bigger body count, against detective Jojima (Show Aikawa), a cop with nothing left to lose. As the gang war escalates and moral boundaries blur, the film barrels toward a gonzo final showdown that detonates everything you thought you knew about yakuza cinema.
What makes Dead or Alive essential isn’t just its gonzo style or jaw-dropping bookends—it’s the pure, anarchic freedom Miike brings to every frame. From kitchen-sink realism to cartoon surrealism, the film changes tone, genre, and physics on a dime. It’s not just a movie—it’s a dare, and Miike dares you to look away.
JULY 19 DOUBLE FEATURE
Buckle up for a double dose of lawless energy: Redline and Dead or Alive form a high-octane pairing that blurs the line between anime spectacle and live-action anarchy. Director Takeshi Koike’s Redline is a decade-in-the-making adrenaline rush—fully hand-drawn, bursting with color, and driven by a rebel spirit that refuses to slow down. It sets the perfect stage for the wild-eyed chaos of Dead or Alive, where outlaw filmmaker Takashi Miike unleashes a barrage of gangland violence, coke-fueled excess, and one of the most unhinged opening sequences in cinema history.
Both films take genre to the extreme and style to the brink, trading logic for velocity and smashing expectations with gleeful abandon. Whether animated or live-action, this double feature captures the fearless, genre-defying ethos at the heart of Anime Club Presents.
