It’s not a satire. It’s a daydream. It joyfully picks up tropes from spy movies, broad comedies, and teen dramas and just as joyfully discards them if they stand between the viewer and the easy delight of a really good fantasy.” –Elaine Atwell, The Dart

The star of a teenage crimefighting group falls for the alluring villainess who she must bring to justice in this campy, sapphic debut feature from writer/director Angela Robinson.

Recruited by the U.S. government for their unique ability to lie, cheat and fight, Amy, Max, Janet, and Dominique join an underground academy of secret agents known only as D.E.B.S. (Discipline, Energy, Beauty, Strength). On a mission to stop the villainous Lucy Diamond, the D.E.B.S. must work together – and navigate an unexpected romance – before the world and their friendships fall apart.

Starring Sara Foster, Jordana Brewster, Meagan Good, and Devon Aoki, D.E.B.S. is an underrated gem of the early 2000’s, not in the least because of its unabashed portrayal of lesbian attraction. Based on comics she drew in college, Chicago-born writer/director Angela Robinson (Professor Marsten & the Wonder Women) received a $20,000 grant to make an 11-minute short, which became D.E.B.S. (2003) and led to the green-lighting of her 2004 debut feature, now considered a cult classic 20 years later.

Angela Robinson, United States, 2004, 92 minutes. DVD
