In-Person Screening

Demonlover

Screening October 21, 2022

“Assayas embraces uncertainty with kinetic image-making and subversive, even dreamlike turns in narrative.” – Glenn Heath Jr., The Film Stage

Featuring an original Sonic Youth soundtrack, standout performances from a star-studded cast, and a hefty dose of corporate espionage, Demonlover seduces the viewer in the uncanny otherworlds of technology.

Chloë Sevigny, Connie Nielsen, and Gina Gershon play sleek rival agents doing the bidding of two powerful corporations vying for a contract with a Tokyo-based hentai producer in hopes of dominating the growing market. This hallucinatory, globe-trotting neo-noir thriller from Olivier Assayas exists as a postmodern media critique in which nothing—not even the film itself—is what it appears to be.

The glassy, glossy surfaces of the film are offset by its nerve-fraying soundtrack, as boardroom poise threatens to give way to boldfaced brutality in a narrative that glides from Paris to Tokyo to an isolated part of Mexico and the American suburbs, all with the speed of a broadband signal.

In French, English and Japanese with English subtitles.
