FACETS Film Trivia is back at 7pm on Thursday, September 26th with our classic blend of infotainment quiz show fun, followed by a special after-trivia screening of the 1992 cult classic Encino Man preceded by the short film Road Head.

When two high school losers find a frozen caveman in their backyard they suddenly find themselves the sidekicks of the most popular new student in school.

An immediate cult hit on its release, Encino Man has gone from being a frivolous fan favorite teen comedy to a time capsule of ‘90s American teen culture – not to mention an accidental showcase for future Hollywood stars. Originally created as a vehicle for popular MTV personality Pauly Shore, Encino Man was a silly film geared directly to the music video generation youth market. With school dance sequences, annoying younger siblings, high school cliques, makeover montages, and cartoonish characters, this film has everything you want in a teen movie. Mix a fish out of water story and a classic snobs vs slobs trope, and you have the perfect mix for mindless, familiar fun.

Time, though, has been shockingly good to this film. Looking at it now, with its fashions, music choices, slang, and characters, Encino Man has become a movie that is so of the 1990s that it almost seems like a parody of teen films of the 1990s. Couple that with the fact that two actors (co-lead Brendan Fraser and Ke Huy Quan) in the film won acting Oscars in 2023, and that another co-lead (Sean Astin) starred in the 17 time Oscar winning Lord of the Rings trilogy, Encino Man has become an incredible document of future talent. Watching future dramatic and action-fantasy heavyweights wax philosophical about such topics as nugs, chillin’, and grindage is as fun as it is ridiculous. Very few films become fodder for movie trivia questions the way Encino Man has.

Screening will be preceded by Allison Torem’s short film Road Head (2023) – she will be attendance.

Directed by Les Mayfield, USA, 88 minutes
