“Whether or not evil exists, I’m glad a movie this mysterious and powerful does.” – Justin Chang, NPR
“Evil Does Not Exist leans toward a folk-horror tradition, as Hamaguchi slowly pivots away from dispassionate naturalism, building to an impressionistic, opaque finale.” – Joshua Rivera, Polygon
Deep in the forest of a small rural village single parent Takumi lives with his young daughter, Hana, taking care of odd jobs for locals, chopping wood and hauling pristine well water, in an area of outstanding natural beauty.
The overpowering serenity of this untouched land of mountains and lakes is about to be disrupted by the imminent arrival of the Tokyo company Playmode, which is ready to start construction on a glamping site for city tourists, a plan, which Takumi and his neighbors soon discover, will have dire consequences for the ecological health and cleanliness of their community. This ambitious development plan rings alarm bells as they grasp its dire environmental implications, so they decide to take a stand with strong resistance.
However, Ryûsuke Hamaguchi (Drive My Car and Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy), has made an enigmatic drama that is much more nuanced and ambiguous, darker and more mysterious, than a simple struggle between country and city, between ecological values and rampant exploitation.
