On Thursday, October 20, FACETS Anime Club presents a double bill of cult classic psychedelic animation from two anime legends, an encore screening of Angel’s Egg (1985) at 7:00pm and Belladonna of Sadness (1973) at 9:00pm. 

To kick off the FACETS Anime Club – a members-only monthly event, we’re hosting an open to the public double feature pairing Mamoru Oshii’s mesmerizing gothic tale of questioned faith Angel’s Egg with the hallucinatory swirl of haunted water-color animation from Eiichi Yamamoto, Belladonna of Sadness. 

Both films exemplify how a minimal approach to either story or animation can sometimes produce the most impactful results. Angel’s Egg and Belladonna of Sadness were both financial and critical flops at their time of release (the latter even bankrupting its production studio) but have gained cult followings and critical acclaim since being rediscovered by modern audiences.
