LOVE LIES BLEEDING

May 10, 12 & 18-19

Love Lies Bleeding is a gripping romantic thriller that delves deep into the complexities of love, ambition, and betrayal, before the blood starts pouring.

This film follows the story of Lou (Kristen Stewart, Certain Women, Crimes of the Future), a reclusive gym manager, who finds herself captivated by Jackie (Katy O’Brian), an ambitious bodybuilder who dreams of making it big in Las Vegas. Set against the backdrop of the 1980s, their passionate romance takes a dark turn when it ignites violence and draws them into the dangerous world of Lou’s seedy criminal family, led by her estranged father (Ed Harris). As their love story unfolds, tensions rise, and loyalties are tested, leading to a series of gripping twists and turns that keep viewers on the edge of their seats.

In this gritty, neon-hued drama, director Rose Glass (Saint Maud) has made an off-the- wall, rambunctious lesbian love story that has a distinctive, bold style which is also thrilling a journey of love and deception.

DO NOT EXPECT TOO MUCH FROM THE END OF THE WORLD

May 11-12 & 18-19

As he proved with his scandalous, scathing political comedy Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn (2021), Romanian filmmaker Radu Jude is among the most radical filmmakers working today.

In his latest film, Do Not Expect Too Much From the End of the World, Jude again explodes conventional boundaries of narrative and form, this time charting a lacerating course through one day in the life of a severely overworked film production assistant, Angela, who drives around Bucharest on her latest gig: filming work accident victims auditioning to be in a safety equipment video for a German multinational corporation. At the same time, the sleep-deprived Angela upkeeps her own side project—a face-filtered, trash-talking, right-wing alter ego with more than 20,000 viewers that serves as the film’s perverse Greek chorus.

Intercutting all this with footage from Romanian director Lucian Bratu’s feminist 1981 film Angela Moves On, following the travels of a female cab driver around the city’s same sights and locations, Jude initiates a conversation with his country’s past and present, while engaging in a meta-commentary about the ability of the captured image to exploit, and to contort the truth. Featuring appearances from Nina Hoss, Uwe Boll, and Angela’s TikTok alter-ego Bobiță, Jude’s anarchic satire is a wild and unforgettable ride through the vulgar indignities of the 21st century. SUPER-HORROR-RAMA! – TV SHOCKERS

Friday, May 17 at 7:00pm & 9:00pm

Friday, May 17, 2024, SUPER-HORROR-RAMA! gives small-screen terrors the big-screen treatment with a double feature of nerve-shredding made-for-TV movies, Steven Spielberg’s Duel (1971) at 7pm and John Carpenter’s Someone’s Watching Me! (1978) at 9pm.

2 limited edition pinback buttons are included with every Double Feature Ticket. We’ll also have horror vendors, drink specials, and special giveaways before both films.

Before Steven Spielberg and John Carpenter hit the big time with Jaws (1975) and Halloween (1978), they directed two of television’s greatest cat-and-mouse thrillers, Duel and Someone’s Watching Me!, both of which evoke the pitch-perfect suspense of Alfred Hitchcock.

Referred to by Stephen King as his favorite horror film of the 1970s, Spielberg’s Duel follows an ordinary man driving a compact car through the Mojave Desert who is stalked by a rusted semi-truck with a driver of unknown identity. Due to the success of the original broadcast, Universal asked Spielberg to shoot additional scenes and gave the extended cut an international theatrical release.

Carpenter’s equally tense Someone’s Watching Me! was shot immediately before Halloween and finally broadcast a month after Michael Myers’ haunting debut. The story follows a working woman terrorized by a creepy caller who spies on her from the neighboring high-rise. With an exceptionally endearing cast of characters and strong shades of Rear Window (1954), Someone’s Watching Me! is a creepy delight.

Explore the fear of the unknown from uniquely masculine and feminine perspectives in this double feature of extraordinary television films by two of genre cinema’s most celebrated figures.

DOUBLE FEATURE SCHEDULE

Duel – Friday, May 17, 7:00 pm

Someone’s Watching Me! – Friday, May 17, 9:00pm

This screening is sponsored by The House of Monsters and programmed by John McDevitt, FACETS’ Community Engagement Manager.
