CHICAGO HORROR – Screening Sept 30, 2022
Friday, September 30, 2022, FACETS presents two horror films centered on blue-collar communities in Chicago, Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer (1982) at 7:00pm and Stir of Echoes (1986) at 9:00pm, which also remind us humans are the real monsters.
Chicago is home to some of the horror genre’s most iconic monsters, Candyman and Chucky, but FACETS is straying from these familiar offerings to show you two other fantastic horror films shot and set in Chicago, Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer and Stir of Echoes, both of which are underseen chillers that focus on blue-collar communities faced with devastating crimes.
Henry and Stir of Echoes are also socially conscious horror films of grave importance, bravely telling Me Too stories decades before the social movement gained national attention, at points in time when these topics were strictly taboo.
This double feature is programmed by John McDevitt, FACETS Community Engagement Coordinator.
Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer – Sept 30 @ 7:00 pm
Stir of Echoes – Sept 30 @ 9:00 pm
A SYMPHONY OF HORRORS: THE OLD, THE NEW & THE UNEXPECTED
Screening Oct 9-29, 2022
For this October, FACETS Cinema has selected eight films, under the banner of A Symphony of Horrors: The Old, the New, & the Unexpected.
The films in this program consists of such horror classic fare as Cat People (1942) and Eyes without a Face (1960), which use the power of suggestion to create a mood of fear. It Comes at Night (2017) and Under the Skin (2013), use the environment of the nocturnal to cause discomfort and uneasiness. Keane (2004) and Audition (1999) examine the qualms induced by the desperate preservation of the family structure. The Descent (2005) and Train to Busan (2016), have zombies, the always fascinating and reliable undead who have been used by filmmakers as a metaphor for many deeper fears: racial sublimation, atomic destruction, and mass contagion. We close out the series with vampires, featuring the perfectly paced Swedish horror Let the Right One In (2004).
Now it is time to activate those biochemicals inside our bodies, trigger the release of adrenaline, and embrace out need to consume horror, which is a great way to bond and connect with our friends and family.
All titles programmed and written by FACETS Film Program Director Charles Coleman.
