“Danny DeVito’s big-screen adaptation of Roald Dahl’s Matilda alternately warms and chills but never leaves you feeling cooked to mush or frozen with terror.” – Hollis Chacona, Austin Chronicle

This 1996, Danny DeVito-directed update of the beloved book from Roald Dahl, is odd and charming. While the movie diverges from its source material, it captures the book’s spirit, telling the story of Matilda, an extremely intelligent and mature young girl who shares a home with parents who ignore her and a brother who mistreats her. Upon starting school, Matilda grows close to the kind and caring teacher Miss Honey but also falls foul of the bullying principal of the school, Miss Trunchbull. When Matilda discovers that she has telekinetic powers, she sets out to right all of the wrongs in the world around her. This timeless and funny tale puts kindness above all else and has a strong anti-bullying message at its heart whilst also being wildly entertaining.
The ”Family Frights” screening of Matilda was programmed by CICFF Programmer Deidre Searcy.
