“Frances Ha is built of the stuff of classic-modern ultra-low-budget independent films” – Richard Brody, The New Yorker
“With a deceptively light touch, Baumbach and Gerwig stir the muddy waters of money, class, sex, love, friendship and the pain of betrayal.” – Peter Travers, Rolling Stone
Greta Gerwig co-wrote and stars in this era-defining modern comic fable that explores New York, friendship, class, ambition, failure, and redemption.
Frances (Greta Gerwig) is a woman in her late twenties trying to sort out her career ambitions, her finances, and, above all, her intimate but shifting bond with her best friend, Sophie (Mickey Sumner). She wants so much more than she has, but lives her life with unaccountable joy and lightness, leading her to follow her dreams no matter what the outcome. With an effortless combination of sweetness and wit, Frances Ha gets at both the frustrations and the joys of being young and unsure of where to go next.
This wry and sparkling coming-of-age story launched both Gerwig and Baumbach’s careers into new heights, and shaped the independent cinema scene as we know it today. Coming up on the 10th Anniversary of its premiere at the Telluride Film Festival, Frances Ha has since reached and inspired young audiences more than anyone could have anticipated upon its release.
