Two is always better than one, and the pairs in these films prove it! From sisters to BFFs, frenemies to partners in love & crime, this series celebrates some of our favorite on-screen femme duos.
Galentine’s Day (celebrated on February 13th) might be a made-up holiday coined by a 2010’s sitcom character, but the feminist spirit of the holiday has permeated culture in the last decade and become a longstanding tradition celebrated between friends. This year, we’ve chosen 5 films that run the gamut of women’s relationships – from sisterhood, to friendship, to romance and even some frenemies thrown in there to make for an exciting study of bonds between women on the silver screen.
Kicking off the 3-day series Friday at 7pm is the farcical reimagining of the Watergate scandal, Dick (1999) starring future A-listers Kirsten Dunst and Michelle Williams. On Saturday, watch the Wachowski sisters’ feature film debut, the Chicago-set lesbian heist film, Bound (1995) at 7pm followed by the Canadian coming-of-age feminist horror about two outcast sisters battling puberty and lycanthropy, Ginger Snaps (2000) at 9pm. To close out the series on Sunday, catch a double feature of NYC time capsules told from two very different perspectives, Claudia Weil’s, Girlfriends (1978) at 3pm and Whit Stillman’s The Last Days of Disco (1998) at 5pm.
