In 2009, director Damien Chazelle (Whiplash, Babylon) wrote and shot a low-budget, east coast independent film that would outline many of the themes and ideas he would build on for his award-winning La La Land.
Following the screening of Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench, audiences will be treated to an exclusive pre-recorded interview with director Damien Chazelle conducted by programmer Lee Kepraios.
The 2016 musical would win him an Academy Award for Best Director and two awards for Best Original Score and Best Song for his composer and longtime collaborator, Justin Hurwitz. The original score and songs composed for Guy and Madeline, with lyrics written by Chazelle, mark the beginning of their fruitful collaboration in this grainy, black & white ode to the magic and melancholy of big city romance, intimately and energetically shot in 16mm. Its youthful leads, a dedicated Boston jazz trumpet player (Jason Palmer) and an aimless, introverted restaurant worker (Desiree Garcia) live in their work, dream of finding love and success in cramped city apartments, and contemplate the decision to let the past go or move on.
