☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ – “Hard Truths is a deeply sober, sombre, compassionate drama about a black British family, with flashes of fun and happiness that are emollient if not exactly redemptive” – Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian

Hard Truths by Mike Leigh is a darkly comedic and emotionally complex film about a Black family in London, centered on Pansy (Marianne Jean-Baptiste), whose constant criticism and hypersensitivity strain her relationships with her husband, son, and others.
The film explores Pansy’s grief and how it affects her family, highlighting their varying responses to her struggles. Raging against every aspect of her domestic life and fearful of the world beyond, Pansy only finds potential solace in the unwavering love of her sister, Chantelle (a magnificent Michele Austin). With Leigh’s signature attention to detail, the film offers a deep, empathetic portrayal of the family, leaving viewers with an understanding of their complexities and emotional challenges.
Reuniting with his star from the Oscar-nominated Secrets & Lies star, Marianne Jean-Baptiste and returning to contemporary London, this latest work from auteur Mike Leigh is bracingly tough, funny, and pierced with insight, as Hard Truths is a psychologically rich ensemble film as only Leigh can cultivate.
