Hip Hop + Horror

Screening October 14, 2022

At the intersection of music and the moving image, here lies – Hip Hop and horror cinema!

On Friday, October 14th, FACETS presents Hip Hop + Horror with a double bill featuring James Bond III’s Def By Temptation (1990) at 7:00pm and Ernest Dickerson’s Bones (2001) at 9:00pm.

These films exemplify the blend of the two distinct art forms as an intentionally maximalist and expressionistic form of contemporary Black storytelling. There’re scares, comedy, Blaxploitation, Troma, Giallo, gore… and more! Impressive imagery in cinematography, set design and practical effects that leaves a lasting impact.

The films invoke complex topics – from gentrification, generational curses, and police corruption to masculinity, respectability politics and sexual anxiety. All relevant to today, these frightfully surreal stories have inspired, stylistic choices, parabolic social relevance yet with a sense of play that reminds audiences Black horror cinema is a uniquely evolving voice.

After decades of obscurity and commercial-filled cable TV runs which wrote off their artistry, these works, and their authors, deserve a critical look and celebration. They are rightfully cult classics – so join us for a crowd-pleasing, thought-provoking night!
