Our Holiday Detour series returns for its third year to mix up your December viewing with films that use their seasonal setting to challenge the holiday canon.

Holiday classics are adored for a reason, but films that use their festive setting in an unexpected way are the most fun for those of us who revel in a twist on this time of year. The films in this series tackle the holiday season differently than their contemporaries and might just become your new holiday viewing tradition.

Kicking off the series on Friday, December 8th is Wong Kar-wai’s sequel to his acclaimed masterpiece In the Mood for Love (2000), the stylish sci-fi romantic drama 2046 (2004). Next is Tim Burton’s kinetic and kinky sequel to his 1989 take on the caped crusader, Batman Returns (1992), screening on Saturday, December 9th. Continuing the exploration of societal expectations of relationships and masculinity is Douglas Sirk’s sweeping May-December melodrama All That Heaven Allows (1955) on Sunday, December 10th. The rarely screened psychological drama from Scottish auteur Lynne Ramsay, Morvern Callar (2002) begins the next weekend of programming on Friday, December 15th. The visceral slasher and New French Extremity standout Inside (2007) screens on Saturday, December 16th. Closing out the series is Billy Wilder’s Oscar-winning black and white romantic comedy starring Jack Lemon and Shirley MacLaine in an office love triangle, The Apartment (1960).

Screenings accompanied by introductions from local critics and film authorities, Michael Glover Smith, Megan Fariello, Kat Sachs, Katie Rife, and Ben Sachs!
