“If I Had Legs I’d Kick You vibrates with a primordial love and respect for its heroine, one that self-evidently stems from Bronstein’s own experiences as a mother, but the film refuses to wink at its audience or often even the slightest hint of memeable solidarity.” – David Ehrlich, Indiewire
A raw, darkly funny portrait of burnout and survival, If I Had Legs I’d Kick You is the ferocious new film from writer-director Mary Bronstein (Yeast), returning with an unflinching look at motherhood, mental health, and the quiet violence of being stretched beyond one’s limits.
Led by a fearless, career-best performance from Rose Byrne, the film follows a mother spiraling under the weight of caregiving, work, and an ever-eroding sense of self as her young child’s chronic illness dominates every corner of her life. What begins as a familiar story of parental exhaustion gradually mutates into something more surreal, abrasive, and emotionally exposed, blurring the line between internal collapse and external reality.
With a sharp supporting cast including Conan O’Brien and Danielle Macdonald, Bronstein’s film is confrontational, funny, and deeply unsettling—eschewing sentimentality in favor of brutal honesty. If I Had Legs I’d Kick You is a cathartic scream of a movie, capturing the rage, absurdity, and isolation that can accompany love pushed to its breaking point.
