In-Person Screening

In Front of Your Face

(Dangsin-eolgul-apeseo)

Screening August 13-14, 2022

“One of Hong’s most emotionally generous films. In a career full of small triumphs, it’s a beautiful gesture of family love, of non-specific spiritual awakening, and self-possession meant to create outward waves of goodness.” – Dave White, The Wrap

After years of living abroad, a middle-aged former actress (Lee Hye-young) has unexpectedly returned to South Korea to mysteriously reconnect with her past and perhaps make amends.

Over the course of one day in Seoul, via various encounters, including staying with her younger sister; a shopkeeper who lives in her converted childhood home; and, finally, a well-known film director with whom she would like to make a comeback, we discover her resentments and regrets, her financial difficulties, and the big secret that is keeping her aloof from the world. Beguiling in its mix of the spiritual and the cynical, In Front of Your Face finds the endlessly prolific filmmaker Hong Sang-soo (Woman on the Beach, Tale of Cinema) once again, continues his exploration of the complexity of human relationships, and has made a film that opens a door into Sangok’s current purpose, one centered on keeping her life her own.

An Official Selection of the 59th New York Film Festival.

Directed by Hong Sang-soo , South Korea, 2021, DCP, 85 mins.
