Feminism and New French Extremity have always been a potent mix in the hands of visionary women like Catherine Breillat (Fat Girl) and Claire Denis (Trouble Every Day). With In My Skin (2002), writer-director-star Marina de Van carved out her place among them, delivering a hypnotic and horrifying portrait of bodily autonomy and self-destruction.
The film follows Esther, a successful woman recovering from a seemingly minor leg injury, who begins to develop a disturbing obsession with her own flesh. As her fascination with pain and self-mutilation deepens, the boundaries between control, pleasure, and disintegration blur. At once beautiful and grotesque, In My Skin is body horror as feminist rebellion — a raw and unforgettable descent into the darker corners of the self.
