“A perverse parable about the corrupting elements of power, and a candidate for the greatest predated Patriot Act movie ever” – David Fear, Time Out
“A clever mixture of psychology and suspense, burrowing into the inspector’s paranoia while [he] rushes headlong into the investigation.” – Roger Ebert
He killed her because he could…
In Elio Petri’s Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion, there is no confusion as to who the killer is, but there is certainly confusion as to who the killer isn’t. Opening with a man of power and prestige brutally slitting his lover’s throat, this lurid sequence is textbook Giallo, but Petri presents a very different type of Italian crime thriller. Winner of the Academy Award of Best Foreign Film in 1971, this damning portrayal of high-profile police corruption in post-war Italy seethes with the art of murder and the science of satire.
The screening will be preceded by an introduction from series programmer Stephanie Sack.
Screening in Italian with English subtitles.
