“Funny, violent, sexual… It makes you reconsider what you and everyone else is doing in life and in art.” – Amy Taubin, Soho Weekly News.
“A witty and visually brilliant essay on gender and experience, culture and environment” – National Film Theatre, London
A unique and totally original work by Austria’s foremost filmmaker, Invisible Adversaries is at once philosophical and funny, psychologically revealing and sexually frank.
Set in contemporary Vienna, Valie Export’s controversial feature involves a photographer, Anna (Susanne Widl), who discovers that extra-terrestrial beings are colonizing the minds of her fellow citizens by raising the human aggression quotient. The outer world immediately becomes disjointed, but the inner world does too, as Anna and her love (Peter Weibel) try to hang onto their deteriorating relationship.
In 1989 FACETS helped introduce the films of Valie Export to North America by releasing Invisible Adversaries (1976) and two of her other feature films, Menschenfrauen (1977) and The Practice of Love (1984) on home video. Pick up DVD copies of all three at our 47th Anniversary 50% off DVD sale, available May 1-31, 2022.
