“From a distance, Materialists seems like a straightforward love-triangle rom com, but Celine Song transforms it into a meaningful, introspective drama about self-worth.” – IGN
“Song has a particular knack for telling stories that break down the walls around our hearts and leave us aching in the best way possible.” – Screen Rant
Lucy (Dakota Johnson), a young, ambitious, successful, but defiantly single Manhattan matchmaker, finds herself torn between her perfect match, the wealthy Harry Castillo (Pedro Pascal), and her imperfect ex, aspiring actor-turned-waiter John (Chris Evans), in this sophisticated throwback romantic melodrama.
Written and directed by Celine Song whose debut feature, Past Lives, was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay in 2024. This film is different than the traditional love rom-com-type setup, as Song explores the nature of modern romantic love and its deeper complications through the landscape of the perilous contemporary dating scene. It is sharper and more thoughtful film than this genre would suggest, in a story about perceived value and what its pursuit costs its characters — emotionally, physically, and materially.
Directed by Celine Song, U.S.A./Finland, 2025, 109 mins.
