In-Person Screening

Mind Game

Screening June 17, 2022

“Brain-teasing, wildly unpredictable animated feature — that sometimes masquerades as traditional anime — periodically shifts graphic gears to present a cacophony of varied abstract drawing styles” – Ronnie Scheib, Variety

Buckle in and prepare to surrender yourself to an exhilarating and wildly entertaining avant-garde head-trip from Masaaki Yuasa.

A cult phenomenon in Japan, Masaaki Yuasa (The Night is Short, Walk on Girl) and Koji Morimoto’s (The Animatrix) explosion of unconstrained expression tries, masters, and disposes of just about every animation style you can think of during its runtime. The film follows Nishi, a loser who has a crush on his childhood girlfriend. After an encounter with the Japanese mafia, the film follows Nishi as he journeys to heaven and back and ends up trapped in an even more unlikely place. Nishi (and some friends) attempt to break out of their trap and discover what it truly means to be alive along the way.

This philosophical and earthy adaptation of Robin Nishi’s manga is a pure product of an unchained—some would say unhinged—imagination matched to a dynamo talent, and a brain-blitzing experience that can scarcely be described.

Screening in Japanese with English subtitles.
