In-Person Screening

Minding the Gap X Every Speed

Screening May 21, 2022

“Keeping the rough edges in place makes this portrait of youth feel acutely intimate and thrillingly alive.” – Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

“The film’s title ultimately refers not to the physical distance between two surfaces but the emotional leap young people are supposed and indeed expected to make en route to adulthood.” – Adam Woodward, Little White Lies

Watch Kartemquin’s Minding the Gap with Full Spectrum Feature’s Every Speed, two films that approach navigating urban environments in different ways.

Produced by Kartemquin Films, Minding the Gap, the directorial debut of Bing Liu, is a breakthrough documentary film shot over 12 years depicting Liu and his two friends growing up Rockford, Illinois bound together by how skating lets them escape from difficult lives at home. Dealing with themes of race and class, the film is a powerful examination of what things bring us together while showing the effect abusive homes can have on individuals.

Distributed by Full Spectrum Features, Every Speed is a short experimental documentary that looks at the meaning of movement for people with and without physical disabilities – both in terms of design and accessibility of cities and transportation as well as personal experiences of movement – in the context of a culture that places value on independence, speed, and physical ability.

The screening of Minding the Gap will be preceded by the short film Every Speed with a total runtime of 110 mins.

Minding the Gap, Bing Liu, 2018, USA, 93 mins.

Every Speed, Lindsey Martin & Julia Fuller, 2010, USA, 12 mins
