Friday, February 16, 2024, SUPER-HORROR-RAMA! presents a post-Valentine’s double feature of Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975) at 7pm and Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me (1992) at 9:30pm exploring the sister locations of Hanging Rock and Twin Peaks and the kindred spirits of Miranda St. Clare and Laura Palmer.
We’ll have Victorian Lemonade and damn fine cherry pie for sale at our concession stand, a Black Lodge photo booth with red curtains and zig-zag flooring, a mini horror pop-up market with spooky gifts for you and yours, and fantastic giveaways before both screenings!
Picnic at Hanging Rock and Twin Peaks share themes of love and heartbreak, the quaintness of small-town life, wonder and terror evoked by the natural world, touches of the surreal and the supernatural, sexuality ripe for queer interpretation, and the disappearance or death of a teenage girl who is angelic in the minds of the characters who remember her. Watching these powerful psychological horror films side by side, you’ll suspect David Lynch and Mark Frost took the long tour of Hanging Rock before founding Twin Peaks.
A meditation on innocence, loss, and the inquisitive mind, Picnic at Hanging Rock begins with the opening of Valentine’s Day cards at an Australian boarding school for girls in 1900. The girls then venture to a labyrinthine geological formation known as Hanging Rock, and a few of them disappear into the landscape without a trace. Companion to Hanging Rock is Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me, rooted in a similar mystery, the question of who killed homecoming queen Laura Palmer. This prequel film is a deluge of horrifying answers that places Laura (heart locket and all) at the center of the story in depiction of her final days.
