A juvenile delinquent movie for the ‘90s. Rebel without a fuck, London, wants to escape her dysfunctional house filled with an incestuous mother who always hits on her and her mod brother. She wants meaning in life and a cool leather jacket. The mods that her brother runs with wont accept her, and neither will the asian biker gang that the mods are in constant battle with. Her only hope her herself.
Moritsugu’s signature style is readily apparent here, with his embracing of everything trashy and offensive as a way to stealthily get across his social politics. Not unlike his TERMINAL USA, this film challenges Asian stereotypes – both negative and positive. It even takes a few potshots at punk rockers and their adjacent subcultures. The world of MOD FUCK EXPLOSION is one of tension, anarchy, rebellion, confusion, and lots of raw meat. This is WEST SIDE STORY with Maximum Rocknroll ink smudged finger prints all over it. A dialectical love letter to Old Hollywood and punk rock. And utterly beautiful 16mm chaos and trash!
