“The wonderfully lush Morvern Callar is pure punk existentialism…. The movie is painted in the tones of an Ibiza all-nighter, rimmed with the anxiety of being awake and alert when the sun comes up.” —Elvis Mitchell, New York Times

Lynne Ramsay’s psychological drama features an unforgettable performance from two-time Oscar nominee Samantha Morton and soundtrack featuring Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada, The Velvet Underground, Stereolab, Ween, and more.

Supermarket clerk Morvern Callar wakes on Christmas morning to discover that her boyfriend has died by suicide — leaving a note, a killer mix tape, and an unpublished manuscript behind. Erasing his name and adding hers, the manuscript becomes her ticket out of small-town Scotland to the sun-drenched hedonism of beachfront Spain. With her thrill-seeking best friend along for the ride, Movern’s survivor’s guilt manifests a walking coma directly at odds with the bright lights that surround her new life.

Assuredly directed by Lynne Ramsay (Ratcatcher, We Need to Talk About Kevin, You Were Never Really Here), whose control of mood and music plants us firmly in the film, Morvern Callar becomes Samantha Morton’s (Minority Report, Synecdoche, New York) film as she holds us utterly transfixed.

This screening will be preceded by an introduction from FACETS’ Marketing Manager & Holiday Detour series programmer, Emma Greenleaf.
