The Chicago Premiere of Mother Suriname: Mama Sranan (2023), a deep and evocative portrayal of Suriname’s history, interwoven with a moving personal narrative.

Its powerful depiction of the country’s past makes it a significant contribution to understanding Suriname’s cultural and historical landscape. The film beautifully uses rare, manually colorized archival footage to tell the life story of a Surinamese washerwoman, inspired by director Tessa’s grandmother, Fansi. Her journey spans from the abolition of slavery in 1863 to Suriname’s independence in 1975.

Screening in French with English subtitles.

Tessa Leuwsha, 2023, 77 minutes, Belgium, Thriller
