Sharp, unsettling, and startlingly perceptive, the film follows a wealthy New York teenager who, eager to impress his activist crush, follows an online connection to Texas, convinced he can prevent an act of extreme violence before it’s too late.
What begins as a coming-of-age story gradually transforms into something far stranger and more disquieting – a portrait of a generation searching for purpose in a world shaped by endless information, performative activism, online radicalization, and the crushing weight of contemporary anxiety. Few recent films capture the contradictions and disillusionment of Gen Z with such precision. At once empathetic and critical, Our Hero, Balthazar feels remarkably attuned to the internet age, examining how young people navigate identity, morality, and political engagement through screens, algorithms, and digital communities.
Anchoring the film are two extraordinary lead performances that bring warmth, vulnerability, and complexity to characters who could easily have been reduced to archetypes. They’re joined by an impeccable supporting cast, including Becky Ann Baker and Chris Bauer, alongside former teen heartthrobs turned genuinely impressive actors Avan Jogia and Noah Centineo, each delivering memorable turns that enrich the film’s deeply human portrait of contemporary America.
